Australia has defeated Scotland in the one off ODI played at Edinburgh yesterday. Australia won the match by a huge margin of 200 runs.
A large no. of spectators had turned up at Grange Cricket Club Ground to cheer for Scotland, but, they would have returned home disappointed as their team couldn’t even give Australia a run for their money.
The toss was won by the Scottish skipper Preston Mommsen and he elected to bowl first. That proved to be a completely wrong decision as the new look Australian opening pair of Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch was off to a flier.
Both of them smashed the Scottish bowlers to every corner of the ground and put up a huge partnership of 246 runs for the first wicket, which promted Unibet to make them favourites.
The pair was finally split in the 38th over of the match by Majid Haq. Aaron Finch was the first man to depart. He scored 148 runs off just 114 balls with 16 fours and 7 sixes.
But, that wicket didn’t reduce Scotland’s problems. Shane Watson came out at no. 3 and he looked in a similar kind of mood too. There was another 100-run stand between Watson and Marsh for the second wicket which took Australia close to 350.
Iain Wardlaw got a couple of quick wickets at the end, but, those were not of much importance as the damage had already been done.
Australia ended up at 362 for 3 with Marsh being the top scorer. The classy left hander scored 151 runs.
In reply, Scotland had a panicky start. Their top order players tried to throw their bat at everything and ended up getting dismissed cheaply. The hosts were 4 down for just 60 odd runs and the match had already gone out of their hands. It was close to impossible for them to chase down the target from that position.
There were a couple of decent partnerships down the order for Scotland, but, they had to climb a mountain which they couldn’t do eventually.
They got all out for just 162 and suffered a huge defeat.
